Gold vs. Silver: Choosing the Right Role

Gold and silver are both precious metals and both are widely bought in physical form. The practical experience of owning them, however, is quite different.

Value in a small space

Gold is priced far higher per ounce than silver. The same amount of money therefore buys a small, easily stored quantity of gold, or a much larger and heavier quantity of silver. That single fact shapes storage, shipping and handling more than anything else.

Sizes and flexibility

Because silver costs less per ounce, it is available in many affordable sizes, which some buyers like for building a holding gradually or for being able to sell a small part of it. Gold offers small sizes too, down to fractions of an ounce and single grams, though smaller pieces usually carry a higher premium for the metal they contain.

Where demand comes from

Silver is used extensively in industry as well as being held as a precious metal, so its demand comes from more than one direction. Gold is held predominantly as a store of value and for jewellery.

Thinking about roles rather than winners

  • What am I trying to achieve by owning physical metal, and over what period?
  • Where will I keep it, and how much space and security does that require?
  • When I eventually sell, would I rather sell all at once or in parts?
  • Who might one day inherit it, and would they know what it is and how to sell it?

Many people conclude that the two metals suit different purposes and hold some of each. Citizens Gold Reserve does not predict prices; we are glad to explain the products and talk through your goals.
